Western Pennsylvania's stars of reality television
Tuesday, February 15, 2005

People from the Pittsburgh region have competed on many, many reality series, and below you'll find a list of our most prominent stars. This list is by no means exhaustive and doesn't take into account one-shot guest spots on shows like "Trading Spaces," "Street Smarts," "ElimiDATE" and "Wife Swap."

Rick Rockwell, Aspinwall native: Formerly Richard Balkey, this 1975 Fox Chapel Area High School graduate helped jump-start the reality genre when he married Darva Conger in front of 23 million TV viewers on Fox's "Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire?" in 2000.

Amber Brkich, Brighton, Beaver County: A Westminster College graduate, Brkich starred in 2001's "Survivor: The Australian Outback" but didn't make much of an impression the first time out, getting voted off the island prior to the Final Four. It was a different story in 2004, when she won both "Survivor: All-Stars," taking home $1 million and the heart of fellow contestant Rob Mariano. Next month the pair star in CBS's "The Amazing Race."

Sarah Kozer, Hunker, Westmoreland County, native: This "Joe Millionaire" star, who now lives in Los Angeles, gained notoriety for both her captioned reality show appearance -- producers made it appear that she had a slurpy make-out session with "Millionaire" hunk Evan Marriott -- and her pre-"Joe" roles in bondage videos.

Jenna Morasca, South Fayette: A swimsuit model and University of Pittsburgh student, Morasca gained fame doffing her bikini in exchange for chocolate and peanut butter before winning $1 million in 2003's "Survivor: Amazon." She left 2004's "Survivor: All-Stars" to be with her dying mother. She's currently dating "Survivor: Africa" winner Ethan Zohn.

Alison Irwin, Meadville, Crawford County: A December 2002 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Irwin spent two summers on CBS reality shows: "Big Brother" in 2003 and "The Amazing Race" in 2004. Her ex-boyfriend, Pittsburgher Justin Giovinco, appeared with Irwin on "Big Brother 4."

Matt Kennedy Gould, Mt. Lebanon: In 2003, Gould was the first Pittsburgher to discover he was the star of Spike TV's "The Joe Schmo Show," a rigged reality series in which all the other "contestants" were actors working from a script outline. He won $100,000.

Scott Long, Shadyside: This 1997 Kiski Area High School and 2002 University of Pittsburgh graduate lied his way through last year's edition of CBS's "Big Brother" but was evicted from the "Big Brother" house before the finale.

Amanda Naughton, Upper St. Clair native: She became Jane Schmo on "Joe Schmo 2" after the first Jane figured out other contestants were actors. A 1997 graduate of Upper St. Clair High School, Naughton, who now lives in Arlington, Va., proved to be a good sport when it was revealed she'd been duped. She won $100,000.

Dolly Neely, Mercer: A shepherdess and National Rifle Association member, Neely lasted just a couple of episodes on last fall's "Survivor: Vanuatu."

Erin Elmore, Peters native: This model/lawyer is on the "book smarts" team of the current edition of "The Apprentice" (9 p.m. Thursdays, NBC). She's a 1996 graduate of Peters Township High School and resides in Philadelphia.

Ian Rosenberger, Economy, Beaver County: The former Penn State student government president works as a dolphin trainer in Key Largo, Fla., and stars in "Survivor: Palau" (8 p.m. Thursdays, CBS). He grew up on a horse farm in the Ambridge area and attended Quigley Catholic High School in Baden, according to his CBS bio.
