City Council yesterday tentatively approved spending $30,000 to buy 20 small stun guns for city narcotics detectives, and a program to crack down on "nuisance" properties.
Pittsburgh police already have about 150 Taser guns, which they use to stun violent suspects.
Police Cmdr. William Valenta said the guns are too bulky for officers to use while undercover, so police want to buy smaller but more expensive Tasers for some plainclothes officers.
Council also approved a plan by Council President Gene Ricciardi to fine landlords whose apartment units get multiple police complaints from neighbors. Ricciardi said the Murphy administration still has not decided whether to enforce the fines.
Final votes will be Tuesday.
