Five teens arrested in connection with spray-paint vandalism
Wednesday, December 29, 2004

After weeks of investigating, Greensburg police finally nabbed five local teens they say are responsible for spray-painting "GKU" initials on 16 occasions throughout the city.

Since Dec. 6, the initials appeared on a synagogue, outdoor artwork at Westmoreland County Museum of American Art, garages, alleyways and a Christian Laymen thrift store, all within Greensburg city limits.

The five boys -- two 12-year-olds, two 13-year-olds and a 14-year-old, all students at Greensburg-Salem Middle School -- told police their "artwork" was inspired by a "Grand Theft Auto" video game, and GKU stand for "gangster kids united."

They were charged with institutional vandalism, criminal conspiracy, criminal mischief, and desecration of venerated objects.

Damage was estimated at more than $2,000.
