State gives economic aid to local firms

Western Pennsylvania firms will receive $5.8 million in loans, grants and tax credits as part of a $16.1 million aid package approved by the state Department of Community and Economic Development.

Topping the list is Smart Parts Inc., a Westmoreland company that manufactures paint ball guns and accessories. Smart Parts will receive $1.5 million in loans to purchase a plant in Greensburg, creating 42 jobs within three years. The company also will receive $84,000 in job creation tax credits.

Other recipients are Miller Centrifugal Casting, $1.3 million for upgrading equipment and training employees at its Cecil facility; Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Technologies, $1 million in job training funds; NVR Building Products, $876,000 to expand its Darlington operations; Maronda Systems Inc., $548,000 to manufacture components for single-family homes at a new plant in the Monessen Riverfront Industrial Park that will employ 106 within three years; and Pine-based True Commerce, $450,000 in grants and tax credits.
