The Union Project, a non-profit group that's restoring the former Union Baptist Church for use by artists, community builders and people of faith, has received $148,000 through three grants to aid its redevelopment plans.
The Allegheny Foundation has approved $75,000 over three years for general operating support. Mennonite Economic Development Associates has approved a $13,000 sub-grant of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Compassion Capital Fund program. The Grable Foundation approved $60,000 over three years to support the planning and start up of "Union Station" -- a coffee cafe being planned in partnership with Peabody High School culinary arts academy students.
The Union Project has begun renovations on the 15,000-square-foot former church building. Leasable office spaces, a civic gathering space and art studios will be available in summer 2005. Union Station is scheduled to open at the same time.
