About British shorthair cats
Tuesday, December 14, 2004

The British shorthair is comparatively rare in the United States and wasn't recognized for championship competition by The Cat Fanciers' Association Inc., until around 1980. But it is probably the oldest breed of English cat, with roots tracing to the ancient Romans' domestic cats.

According to the Cat Fanciers' Association, the British shorthair is prized for its calm demeanor, endurance and loyalty to humans. Because it is easygoing and intelligent, animal trainers favor it for use in films and television commercials.

It's a larger cat with a short, plush, luxurious coat that is easy to groom. It comes in a variety of colors. It is not particularly athletic -- the association uses the word "gracelessness" -- and always looks before it leaps.

"A British shorthair is always in quiet control of his or her environment, supervising everyone and everything that happens in the family," according to the association's Web site.

"However, they are steadfast companions to the entire family."
