School zones speeding law signed
Thursday, December 09, 2004

A law that will increase fines and penalties for drivers caught speeding in school zones was signed by the governor yesterday.

Gov. Ed Rendell said the new law will better the chances "that every child that walks through a school zone is safe."

Drivers caught speeding more than 11 mph above the limit in a school zone -- that's at least 27 mph -- would be fined up to $500. Drivers cited a second time at such speeds could have their driving privileges suspended for 60 days.

Fines would also be increased for careless driving that results in injury or death. Three points would be assessed to the driver's record.

Under current law, the fine is $35, plus $2 for every mile over 20 mph. The school zone speed limit is 15 mph.

The new law takes effect immediately.
