9 Mt. Lebanon High students charged in theft ring
Monday, November 22, 2004

Nine teens have either been arrested or are awaiting arrest in connection with a theft ring at the Mt. Lebanon High School discovered last week.

The all-male crew, ages 15 to 17, stole electronic items, including 10 calculators worth about $100 each, a $200 iPod MP3 player and a $1,500 video projector, from the high school and from other students, and sold the items for less than retail cost on eBay, said Mt. Lebanon police spokesman Lt. Ken Truver. All suspects are students at the school.

Charges range from theft to receiving stolen property to conspiracy. A breakdown of individual charges by age is not yet available, Truver said. The total value and the number of items sold also is not yet available because the investigation is continuing.

One 17-year-old suspect also was charged with possessing a weapon on school property. School authorities who were questioning the boy searched his car and found a knife in the console.

Truver said the 15-year-old and one of the 17-year-olds were the ringleaders who recruited and encouraged others to participate.

School district officials reported the incident to police Monday, and the first charges were filed Wednesday after police began their own investigation. More charges have yet to be filed.

Police declined to identify the suspects because they are juveniles. School officials will not disclose the suspects' identities or discipline information because of student confidentiality policies, said district spokeswoman Cissy Bowman.
