Q: What can I do to stop receiving pre-approved credit card applications? I don't want them and am careful to shred them, but with so much identity theft going on now, I would prefer not to receive them at all. I became even more concerned recently when we started getting applications with the correct last name, but initials that are neither mine nor my husband's.

A: You have the right to "opt out" or stop credit card companies from providing your name and address to anyone who might ask for it. You simply call 1-888-567-8688. That is an automated phone number that offers to remove your name from the list that any one of the four credit reporting companies might provide.
If you call this number, you will be asked to provide your Social Security number. This is a legitimate request. Remember, the credit card reporting companies already have your Social Security number. This is just a way to confirm you are actually yourself, and not a guardian angel calling on your behalf to make your life less cluttered by unsolicited mail.
If you have previously opted out and miss those mailings, you can call the same number and pick the selection that allows you to opt back in.
Q: I heard that there was an 800 number to call for a replacement latch on Lane Cedar Chests. I can't find that number anywhere. Could you help me?

A: If you have a Lane cedar chest manufactured before 1987, and have not had the lock replaced, you should call the company at 1-888-856-8758. You will be sent a free replacement safety lock.
The Lane Co. recalled all of its 12 million cedar chests manufactured between 1912 and 1987. These cedar chests lock automatically when the lid is closed. They pose a safety hazard to children.
