In the minds of some, Angelo Falconi Jr. is the cat's meow.
Falconi, owner of Angie's Washington Honda Harley-Davidson, donated a building to Washington Area Humane Society that's being used to house newly arrived stray animals and those awaiting medical examinations.
"He just wants people to know the facility is there, and there are pets available for adoption," said Maria Caruso, Falconi's assistant.
The 98-year-old humane society, which already had a main building and "cat castle sanctuary," likes to say it gives pets a "new leash on life." The donated building may have nine lives, too.
Parts for the 20- by 40-foot building came from the old Meadows Racquet Club on Route 19 in South Strabane, now the site of Falconi's motorcycle dealership.
When Falconi was constructing a new building around the racquet club, he saved old siding and other components for the humane society. He then paid a contractor to reconstruct the building at the humane society site in North Strabane, said Bob Crothers, society president.
Crothers said the donated building not only eased crowded conditions in the other buildings but also offered a safe place to house strays, giving owners time to claim them. Also, Crothers said, it's wise to isolate newcomers until they're checked by the medical staff.
The no-kill, nonprofit shelter relies on generosity from supporters such as Falconi. The organization receives no public funds.
At any given time, the humane society said, it has about 40 dogs and 60 cats for adoption.
Caruso described the humane society as Falconi's "charity of choice," saying he has a soft spot for castaway animals. "He wants to do what he can for them," she said.
