Moon trips Blackhawk, 35-14
Saturday, October 09, 2004

Matt Dowdell threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Moon to a surprisingly easy 35-14 victory over Blackhawk in a Parkway Conference showdown played at Moon Stadium.

Dowdell completed 13 of 16 passes for 279 yards to improve his season totals to 54 of 83 for 1,055 yards. He connected with Nick Peterson on an 11-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, which tied the game at 7-7. Dowdell also found Chad Trenney on a 30-yard scoring strike in the third quarter. Trenney caught four passes for 116 yards.

"Matt got the ball to the receivers on the run," said Moon coach Mark Capuano of Dowdell, who completed his first 11 passes. "He also hit alternate receivers in coverage."

Moon (7-0, 4-0), ranked No. 2 in the WPIAL in Class AAA, also scored on runs of 4 and 6 yards by Casey Williams in the second quarter, and a 1-yard run by Dowdell in the fourth quarter.

"All wins are great, but his is the first Moon team to start 7-0," said Capuano, whose squad is averaging 35.7 points per game. "Our offense really sets the tone this year."

Moon accumulated 443 yards in total offense, including 164 on the ground, and held No. 4 Blackhawk (5-2, 2-2) to 127 yards in total offense.

Blackhawk opened the scoring with a 99-yard kickoff return by Jeremy Bruce on the first play of the game, but didn't score again until Bryant Mulig scored on a 7-yard run in the third quarter.

Bruce, who rushed for only 21 yards on 10 carries, was ejected with four minutes left in the third quarter.

"Jeremy is an intense competitor," said Blackhawk coach Joe Hamilton. "Things were not going his way and he reacted the wrong way. He hates to lose."

The victory leaves Moon tied with top-ranked West Allegheny for the Parkway Conference lead, and sets up next week's showdown for No. 1 at West Allegheny.
