Clues sought in double slayings in Homewood
Thursday, October 07, 2004

Homicide detectives yesterday continued to search for clues and suspects in the double slaying of a man and woman in Homewood.

The Allegheny County coroner's office said both victims were stabbed multiple times.

Gilda Venson, 50, of Collier Street in Homewood, suffered fatal stab wounds to her neck, back and face, the coroner's office said.

Alexander Anderson, 55, who lived in the Atwell Street home where the bodies were discovered on Tuesday, died from stab wounds of the torso and trunk.

Police Cmdr. Maurita Bryant said the killings did not appear to be a case of murder-suicide. She declined to comment on whether a weapon was found. She said the two had been friends for at least several years and that Anderson's wife recently died of cancer.

Bryant said police had leads in the case and had not ruled out any possible motive.

The bodies were discovered at 12:33 p.m. in the 6700 block of Atwell Street after Anderson's landlord found blood on the front porch. Venson's body was found in a hallway on the first floor. Anderson was discovered on the floor in a second-story bedroom.

Court records indicate Venson pleaded guilty to robbery, conspiracy and intimidation of witnesses in 1992.

Her sister-in-law, Charlotte Venson, of Homewood, said yesterday that she had not been in trouble with the law since then.

"She was not the type of person anyone would want to harm," Charlotte Venson said, adding that the family had no idea who might have committed the crime. "We're just devastated."
