Nine regional Emmys go to Pittsburgh stations

Going into Saturday's Mid-Atlantic Regional Emmys, Pittsburgh stations had 31 nominations, but only nine local winners came out of the competition.

WTAE led with four awards, KDKA and WQED had two awards each and WPXI took home one. In addition, WTAE chief meteorologist Joe DeNardo received a previously announced governor's award for career achievement.

Most of the awards went to Philadelphia stations, as usual, although WHTM, the ABC affiliate in Harrisburg, won six regional Emmys. Last year, Pittsburgh stations also won nine awards.

Mid-Atlantic Emmy awards comprise entries from Pennsylvania; New Jersey; Delaware; Steubenville, Ohio; and Wheeling, W.Va. The local winners were:

Single news broadcast: 5 p.m. news on WTAE, news director Bob Longo.

Morning newscast: WTAE.

Spot news/single report -- same day: "Little Girl Lost," KDKA-TV, reporter Ross Guidotti, producer Aviva Radbord, photographer Jeff Roupe.

News feature/informational: "Directory Assistance Disasters," WTAE, reporter Wendy Bell.

Magazine format broadcast: "On Q Magazine," WQED, executive producer Jocelyn Hough, supervising producer David Solomon, producer Alicia Schisler, managing editor Michael Bartley.

Program feature/entertainment: "On Q: Row on for Brendan," WQED, reporter Bartley, producer Solomon, photographer/editor Paul Ruggieri, photographer Dave Forstate.

Public affairs program/one-time only special: "One Year on Centre Avenue: David Johnson," WPXI, reporter David Johnson, photographer/editor Ward Hobbs, producer Carrie Moniot, news director Pat Maday.

Reporter/informational: Susan Koeppen, WTAE.
