Notebook: Wide receiver Lee out again with leg injury
Thursday, September 16, 2004

Pitt wide receiver Greg Lee left practice early yesterday with another apparent leg injury.

Lee, the Panthers' leading receiver in the opener Saturday against Ohio University, was one of several players whose toughness was questioned during training camp by Pitt coach Walt Harris for missing practice. Lee originally had a hamstring injury, he was said to have a quadriceps injury.

Harris didn't seem particularly pleased that Lee had to sit out again, especially given the way the receivers performed in the opener.

"The injury went from the back of his leg to the front of his leg before," Harris said. "But I don't know what happened. He was limping early in practice, so we sent him just sent him to get treatment."

Lee's status for Saturday is not known, but if he can't go, the Panthers' receiving corps would be in total disarray. Not that it is in great shape now, but Lee is one of only two experienced healthy receivers on the two-deep.

And, according to Harris, Lee has not caught up from the practice time he missed before.

In Lee's absence yesterday, freshman Kelvin Chandler, who was the third receiver, moved up to the starting role along with Joe DelSardo. Freshman Derek Kinder became the third receiver.

"I don't know if any of our receivers are ready to play other than Joe DelSardo," Harris said. "The rest of them are all learning.

"That is the way it is, so we can't do anything about it. We just have to work them harder. They all have really good attitudes. We just have to find what each of them can do."

One other receiver, Jason Gaffney, missed practice yesterday with an injury. Harris also said that senior Princell Brockenbrough (knee) is not yet close to returning. Both Brockenbrough and sophomore Terrell Allen (wrist) have been working in some of the drills, but Harris said neither has been cleared for contact.

"Terrell is out for the year, even though he is catching some passes now," Harris said.

Quick outs.

John Simonitis (ankle) and Jake Holthaus (leg) also missed practice and both are likely out Saturday. The rest of the team is healthy ... The scheduled national radio broadcast of the game Saturday against Nebraska has been canceled because the broadcast crew, which is based in Mobile, Ala., will be unable to travel this weekend due to conditions caused by Hurricane Ivan. The game, however, will be telecast on ABC to 83 percent of the country. ... Harris was asked about freshman Darrell Strong, who was recently switched to wide receiver. "We're not quite ready to put him in the college football Hall of Fame," he quipped.
