Lawmakers hear steel industry trade complaints
Thursday, August 19, 2004

Steel industry leaders unloaded a lengthy list of problems to members of the Congressional Steel Caucus this morning, with China topping the list.

The roaring Asian giant's rapid economic growth and allegations China is manipulating its currency were the major complaints aired during the 90-minute hearing, moderated by U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., and held at the Allegheny County Courthouse, Downtown.

"I'm concerned that at some time we'll be back in crisis because of what's happening in the world and what's happening in China," said United Steelworkers of America President Leo Gerard, who described China's economic system as a combination of "Rambo capitalism and totalitarianism.

"The administration has refused to take any action against China," Gerard said.

Rising steel imports, pension and health care costs, and strengthening trade laws are among the other issues that need to be addressed, industry leaders said.

Speakers at the hearing included U.S. Steel President John P. Surma and Allegheny Technologies Executive Vice President Jack W. Shilling.
