Paul Spadafora's next opponent will carry two striking similarities to the McKees Rocks boxer into the Chevrolet Amphitheatre ring July 17: an undefeated record and a history of never fighting far from home.
Announced yesterday as Spadafora's second foe as a junior welterweight, Francisco "Pancho Azul" Campos, 32, brings a 20-0 record and 12 KOs crafted almost entirely in his native Costa Rica. Campos began fighting professionally six years ago, though this 5-foot-7 boxer is expected to provide a 10-round punch missing in Spadafora's rout of Ruben Galvan in April -- his first fight at 140 pounds and in almost a year.
"I could've gone with a few American fighters, but it didn't hurt to have a Latin American kid because of the Central America [broadcast-rights] sales," promoter Mike Acri said of the challenger to Spadafora (37-0-1) in this otherwise untelevised fight. "He's much better than the last guy, without a doubt."
In addition to Pittsburgh junior welterweight Joe Wyatt and McKeesport cruiserweight Dan Harvison, Acri added a pair of heavyweights to the Station Square undercard: Beaver's Abraham "African Assassin" Okine (12-1), recent winner of an IBC Americas title, and Pittsburgh's Ricky Carter (2-0).
Ringside seats, at $100 and $50, along with some $35 and $20 tickets, remain available at TicketMaster, Kaufmann's, select Giant Eagles, Blue Eagle Sports in McKees Rocks, Three Rivers Boxing and Mitchell's, Downtown.
