Todd Mowry, associate professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University, has been tapped as the next director of Intel Research Pittsburgh.

The 2-year-old lab is one of four that Intel Corp. has established adjacent to major universities to pursue cooperative, but nonproprietary research. The company regularly rotates leadership of the labs.

Mowry, 37, is a Butler native and earned his doctorate in electrical engineering at Stanford University in 1994. An expert in computer architecture, he has been on the Carnegie Mellon faculty since 1997, and in 1999, was named one of "100 young innovators poised to shape technology" by MIT Technology Review magazine.
