Bethel Park man faces child sex charges
Saturday, June 05, 2004

A Bethel Park man was charged yesterday with arranging to have sex with the 2-year-old daughter of a Eastern Pennsylvania woman who offered the girl to men for sex and sold child pornography featuring her.

Federal agents and police arrested Bernie Sherry, 25, at his home on Eastview Road, where he lives with his parents.

He appeared in federal court yesterday, with his family and friends in the gallery, but he didn't have a lawyer so a hearing could not proceed.

A magistrate judge ordered him detained temporarily until an attorney could be appointed for a hearing next week.

According to an FBI affidavit, Sherry was among several men who received child pornography from the woman, identified only as "Jane Doe," and arranged to have sex with her and the little girl at her home near Reading.

The affidavit includes a transcript of the e-mail conversation in February between the woman and Sherry, who used the screen name rfk12_00. In it, the woman says she is "looking for a guy to join my 3 yo and i" and rfk12_00 replies "cool" and asks where and when the encounter can take place.

The girl is actually 2 and will turn 3 this month.

The case began in February when state police received information about the woman during an investigation of a sex offender in Waco, Texas.

When the FBI interviewed Jane Doe in March, she said she received wired money from men for images of child pornography and arranged online for sexual encounters with the girl at her home.

On one occasion, she said, she and her daughter traveled to Western Pennsylvania so a man could have sex with the girl.

"The investigation to date has revealed that on most occasions, Jane Doe would provide pornographic images of the child victim before the men would travel to have sex with her," the affidavit says.

A medical examination of the girl also showed she has a sexually transmitted disease.

A historical search of Sherry's screen name at Yahoo showed he participated in many online chat groups devoted to child porn and traded child porn online.

Agents from the local Cybercrimes and Crimes Against Children task forces executed a search warrant at Sherry's house yesterday and discovered numerous child pornography images on his computer. One of them was a picture of a man abusing a 3-year-old girl.

Sherry, who said he earns $7.45 an hour working at Burlington Coat Factory, is charged with coercion and enticement, receipt of child pornography and possession of child porn. If convicted, he faces at least five years in prison and could get much more.

A preliminary hearing is set for Monday in U.S. District Court.
