Pittsburgh-area film festivals include annual events, irregularly recurring film series and one-time occasions. Most of them include appearances by filmmakers or other speakers.

Amnesty International Film Festival, 412-665-1714. The international organization spotlights features, shorts and documentaries from around the world that focus on human rights issues. September.

Classic Law Film Series, 724-225-6710. The Washington County Bar Association offers free screenings of well-known films that center on lawyers, trials and legal issues. Guests from the legal field introduce the films. Spring and fall.

Looking at Art, 412-371-0600. Exhibits at the Frick Art Museum inspire the selection of movies in its annual film series. Varies.

Pittsburgh International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival, 412-422-6776. One of the oldest film festivals of its type offers features, documentaries and short films with gay and lesbian themes. Mid-October.

Three Rivers Film Festival, 412-681-5449. The region's biggest film festival, featuring close to 50 features, documentaries and shorts. It's a survey of what's new in American independents, foreign film and local cinema. November.
