Brentwood Volunteer Fire Company will use a building on the grounds of St. Sylvester Church for training exercises on Thursdays in June.
The building, adjacent to the church parking lot, is now used for storage and meetings, but its support beams are starting to rot.
It was used for Confraternity of Christian Doctrine classes for parish students until roughly three years ago and was once used as the church rectory.
Now it will be exposed to smoke and fire as Brentwood and other local fire companies run their training scenarios.
Fire Chief Joe Kramer was excited. "It can sometimes take us some time to find a training site. We really appreciate the opportunity the Diocese of Pittsburgh gave us."
Smoke will be provided by a smoke machine and the fire will be under control but will be enough so that newer firefighters who never fought an actual fire can find out what it is like.
An item in the church bulletin asked parishioners to remove anything they had stored in the building and noted the area may be used to expand the parking lot after the building is burned down.
