Friday, April 30, 2004

An off-duty Pittsburgh police officer has been charged with vehicular homicide and drunken driving in connection with a crash last week that killed his passenger, police said.

Officer Sean Deasy, 29, of Banksville, was in a one-vehicle accident in Brookline that killed Joseph Walker, 27, of Green Tree.

Walker died after the 2002 Mustang in which he was riding went out of control April 21, skidded off the roadway and struck a utility pole on West Liberty Avenue. The crash occurred at 1:55 a.m.

Walker was co-owner of Casey's Draft House on East Carson Street, South Side.

Deasy surrendered to police Wednesday night. In addition to vehicular homicide and driving under the influence, he was charged with involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving, aggravated assault, and speeding.

Information on Deasy's blood alcohol level at the time of the crash was not disclosed.

He was released on his own recognizance. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
