Jeanette couple charged with library thefts
Saturday, April 24, 2004

It's a lending library, Westmoreland County police have reminded a Jeannette couple.

Tanya and Jeffrey Flude of Stella Street were arrested this week for not returning some $8,400 in items they borrowed from public libraries throughout the county. Police said the couple may have sold borrowed books, DVDs and videotapes at flea markets.

County detectives charged the couple with eight counts of theft, eight counts of receiving stolen property and 16 counts of criminal conspiracy. Delmont police lodged similar charges against the couple for $1,300 worth of items that were not returned to that community's library.

Tanya Flude, 29, and Jeffrey Flude, 34, were arraigned before District Justice Helen Kistler of Penn Township and released on bond. They face a preliminary hearing there May 25.

A criminal complaint says material was taken from public libraries in Murrysville, Sewickley, Latrobe, Smithton, Penn, Norwin, Manor and Scottdale. Norwin suffered the biggest loss: 124 items totalling $1,542. The complaint also states that the couple had removed items from a number of county libraries two years ago and that after a civil court proceeding, the Fludes repaid the libraries.
