A year ago, Derek Hock finished second in the WPIAL Class AA diving championships and third at the PIAA level. This season, he climbed to the top in both meets.
Hock, a senior at Hopewell High School, won the PIAA title yesterday at Penn State with 289.45 points. He beat second-place finisher Clark Cohen of Bradford, who had 280.35.
Hock was the only diver from the WPIAL who did well. No one else from the league finished in the top five in the Class AA or Class AAA boys' or girls' championships.
In Class AA boys, Pine-Richland's Jesse Marweg finished sixth and teammate Jayson Loeffert seventh. Loeffert was the WPIAL second-place finisher a few weeks ago.
In Class AAA boys, Gateway's Kevan Phillips went home with a medal by taking sixth place with 387.20 points.
Souderton's Katie Gifford won the Class AAA girls' championship with 302.60 points while Kate Hynes won the Class AA girls' title with 314.85 points. Josh Bonner of Ridley won the Class AAA boys' championship with 452.15 points.
