Arrest in drive-by shooting
Sunday, January 18, 2004

A 17-year-old North Side boy was arrested at Shuman Juvenile Detention Center yesterday and charged with the shooting death of 19-year-old Duquesne University student Carma Reed.

Thomas Vaughn Kelly, of Garfield Street, was arraigned late last night on a charge of criminal homicide in connection with the Jan. 10 drive-by shooting on Belleau Drive.

Reed was a passenger in a car driven by her sister Nalesha Reed, 23, when she was shot.

Nalesha Reed, a Duquesne University graduate, was waiting to make a left turn from Belleau Drive onto Mountford Avenue when an occupant of a car traveling in the opposite direction fired two shots at 12:11 p.m., city police said.

Carma Reed was shot once in the head and died the following day.

Pittsburgh police said Kelly was identified by a witness several days ago, and police knew he was secure at Shuman.

Although Kelly is 17, the case will go to criminal court, not juvenile court. Pennsylvania law requires that everyone charged with homicide be tried as an adult, though a defendant younger than 18 may ask judges to transfer cases to juvenile court for trial.
