In the Class AAAA Section 1 opener for both teams, the Penn-Trafford girls' basketball team needed overtime to win at Franklin Regional, 64-60.
The Warriors (5-0, 1-0) were led by 19 points from Mary Bair and 14 from Autumn Himes.
Jackie Scott had 21 points for the Panthers (4-1, 0-1), including three 3-pointers.
Natalea Gulyas added 11 points and 13 rebounds for Franklin Regional.
Penn-Trafford outscored the Panthers, 6-2, in overtime.
Other top girls' games
Rachel Frederick's 23 points were not enough as North Catholic fell at Chartiers Valley, 60-52. The Trojans (2-2) led by three points heading into the fourth quarter, but the Colts (4-1) outscored North Catholic, 22-11, in the final period. Lindsey Hyre had 16 points for Chartiers Valley.
Bethel Park scored 15 points in the fourth quarter after only getting 24 in the first three to defeat Upper St. Clair, 39-26. The Blackhawks (4-1, 1-0 Class AAAA Section 5) were led by Samantha Loadman's 15 points. Courtney Pawlak had 13 points for the host Panthers (3-2, 0-1).
Buoyed by a 20-0 third quarter, Aliquippa defeated New Brighton, 53-52. The host Quips (3-1, 1-0 Class AA, Section 2) trailed, 33-18, at halftime but led by 10 points in the fourth quarter. Suqeena Humphries helped New Brighton (1-4, 0-1) rally late in the game, making four of her five 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. Aliquippa's Keona Estelle made two free throws with seven seconds to clinch the victory.
Upsets
In the Class AAA Section 2 opener for both teams, Hopewell surprised Center, 58-43. The Vikings (2-3, 1-0) were led by Jordan Zuppe's 20 points. Susan Perich had 17 points for the Trojans (3-2, 0-1).
Class A Monessen downed Class AAAA Pine-Richland, 66-50. The host Greyhounds (2-1) led, 23-9, at the end of the first quarter and were led by Charel Allen's 17 points and 11 assists. Annie Zopf had 27 points for the Rams (3-1).
Stars of the day
Freeport's Michelle Vascik had 20 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals in the Yellowjackets' 54-41 victory against Apollo-Ridge (3-1, 0-1) in Class AA Section 2. Courtney Callas added 12 points for host Freeport (6-0, 1-0).
Amy Johns posted a triple-double for McKeesport in the Tigers' 59-53 victory against Plum. Johns had 26 points, 10 rebounds and 11 blocks as the Tigers (4-1, 1-0) won their Class AAAA Section 4 opener. Marissa Reinhard had 21 points for the Mustangs (0-6, 0-1).
Casey Sawhook of Valley had 28 points in the Vikings' 51-34 victory against Highlands (1-4, 0-1). The Vikings improved to 3-2 (1-0 Class AAA Section 1).
Lizzie Suwala had 35 points for Ford City in the Sabers' 54-43 win at East Allegheny (0-3, 0-1 Class AA Section 1). Suwala leads the WPIAL with an average of 33.0 points a game for the Sabres (4-2, 1-0).
For the record
Nia Capuano passed the 1,000-point plateau in Moon's 64-29 win against Keystone Oaks (2-2, 0-1 Class AAA Section 4). Capuano had 26 points, giving her 1,016 for her career at Moon (3-1, 1-0).
Meghan Cowher also scored the 1,000th point of her career, finishing with 21 for Fox Chapel (2-2, 1-0) in a 69-40 Class AAAA Section 4 victory against Woodland Hills (1-5, 0-1).

Neshannock's Donnie Kirkwood scored the winning points on a jumper off an inbounds pass as time expired to give the Lancers (4-0) a 59-57 victory against Hickory. John Brayner had 21 points for the Hornets.
Vincentian had three players score at least 16 points in a 76-69 defeat of Riverview. The Royals (4-2) got 22 points from David Theis, 17 from Robert Rodgers and 16 from Jason Duty. The Raiders (1-3) were led by Mark Bigenho's 27 points.
