Pirates reliever faces 2nd charge in Illinois
Thursday, November 20, 2003

Jason Boyd has yet to appear in a Pirates uniform since he was claimed off waivers from the Cleveland Indians, but he has been arrested twice in the past month after being involved in fights.

In the latest incident, Boyd was arrested early Sunday and charged with hitting a man in the face with a beer bottle during an argument on the dance floor of a bar in Alton, Ill.

General manager Dave Littlefield said yesterday he had talked with Boyd and his attorney to get his side of the story. The Pirates will have no response until the legal process runs its course.

"We're aware of it," Littlefield said. "It would be premature to speculate until it plays out."

In the latest incident, Boyd was charged with felony aggravated battery and posted $1,500 bond Tuesday, according to the Madison County State's Attorney's office in Illinois. A court date has not been scheduled.

According to Alton Police Chief Chris Sullivan, Boyd argued with Nicholas R. Stephens. When another person tried to separate them, Boyd stepped around the person and hit Stephens with a beer bottle.

The arrest came less than two weeks after Boyd was charged with punching a man during a recreational basketball game. He is due in court Dec. 10 on the misdemeanor battery charge.

Boyd, who grew up in Edwardsville, Ill., was claimed off waivers from Cleveland last month. He went 3-1 with a 4.30 ERA in 44 games for the Indians this past year after starting the season at Class AAA Buffalo.
