Travelers Property Casualty Corp. commemorated the 100th anniversary of its Pittsburgh office Oct. 31 with an open house celebration for 500 staff members, independent insurance agents and brokers, and invited guests at its offices at Two Chatham Center.

The Community College of Allegheny College Educational Foundation, the private fund-raising arm of CCAC, is seeking nominations for the seventh annual Legends in Leadership awards. Legends awards honor students, former students, members of the faculty and staff or administration, and friends who have made a positive and lasting impact on CCAC. Eligibility criteria can be found on the nomination form that can be downloaded from CCAC's Web site at www.ccac.edu. All nominations are due by Dec. 8. Riverside Center for Innovation said Psycho Guys would provide consulting to Riverside's entrepreneurs and start-ups on issues including workplace culture, coaching and organizational design.

McGuire Woods LLP has created a separate health care department, with 22 lawyers devoted to providing legal services to health care clients across the United States.

Great Lakes Transportation LLC said an agreement was reached to sell its railroad and related holdings to Montreal-based Canadian National Railway Co. for $380 million.

The Rotary Club of Pittsburgh has entered into an expanded partnership with Caring Habit of the Month Adventure. In addition to a grant of more than $36,000, the organization will expand the "Rotarians in the Classroom" program as well as develop a presentation manual for Rotarians to use in communicating the Caring Habit monthly theme.

After four years of being on staff in Pediatric Cardiology at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, Prapti Kenani, M.D., has started her own practice, Pediatric Cardiology of Western PA, located at 3500 Brooktree Road, Wexford, with a satellite location in Butler.

Synergy Real Estate Corp. has been awarded an exclusive arrangement to represent the Fayette County Redevelopment Authority of Pennsylvania with leasing and sales marketing of the 600-acre Fayette County Business Park.

Adelphia Media Services has chosen Giant Ideas as its agency of record for the remainder of 2003 and 2004.

Schneider Downs & Co. Inc. hired Kolbrener to redesign all of the firm's marketing communications, including its tag line and identity, collateral material, Web site and advertising for its Columbus, Ohio, office.

Operative Communications and Cameron Multimedia have been chosen by il Pizzaiolo to design a new brand identity, menus, Web site, e-mail marketing system, print advertising, and other collateral.

A to Z communications inc. said it was selected by United Way of Allegheny County as agency of record for its 2003 campaign, including advertising, marketing collateral and video/multimedia promotions.

PWCampbell has been awarded a design/build contract by Keystone Savings Bank to complete its operations center renovation, involving three existing facilities.

WTW Architects of Pittsburgh in cooperation with Lyman, Davidson & Dooley of Marietta, Ga., has been selected to design a 40,000-square foot renovation of the Houston Building, the former bookstore at Georgia Institute of Technology.

ASE Edge named Dickerson & Mangus Ink. agency of record.

Sewickley Graphics and Design has been awarded a contract with St. Alexis parish, Wexford, to design and produce a new image logo and stationery along with new directional signage, Web site and capital campaign brochure collateral.

VAI Industries (UK) limited, Blast Furnace Technology division has been awarded a contract for a Hot Blast Stove by ISCOR Flat Steel Products' Vanderbijlpark Steel Works, South Africa.

Carl Walker Construction received two new contracts in the Pittsburgh area: a $3.89 million contract with the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh to act as general contractor on the LTV Garage No. 3 at South Side Works, and a contract with the Mt. Lebanon Parking Authority to carry out structural repairs to the Mt. Lebanon South Parking Garage.

Celli-Flynn Brennan Turkall has been commissioned to design the new St. Francis Central Catholic Elementary School for 600 pupils on a site high above Interstate 68 in Morgantown, W.Va. CFBT also is working for the Boy Scouts of America on an addition/renovation to the assembly hall at Camp Twin Echo and on a 150-seat expansion of The Commons at Washington and Jefferson College. The architecture of this dining expansion will remain rooted in the Collegiate-Gothic tradition.

CommuniTech announces said it was selected to develop and implement a range of marketing initiatives for Mobile Aspects Inc. The marketing campaign will involve a variety of services, including regional and national initiatives, product branding, the development of corporate collateral and Web site enhancements.

The Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, awarded a design/build contract to Mascaro Construction Co. LP for the renovation and expansion of Building 246 at Fort Belvoir, Va. The addition will enhance the electrical and telecommunication services for the entire facility and provide new switchgear, UPS and an emergency generator system with 100 percent backup capability. Mascaro, and its design partner, Baker and Associates, will complete the design and construction process in 12 months. Dick Corp. has been awarded a $64.9 million contract by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission for construction of Section 54A of the Findlay Connector highway project. The project includes grading and paving of 1.4 miles of four-lane, limited-access expressway; construction of seven new bridges as part of the Route 60/airport interchange; and widening of one bridge at the existing Route 60 airport interchange. Also included is construction of two "missing" ramps at the Clinton Road interchange, most of the southbound off and northbound on ramps at the Connector's interchange with U.S. Route 30, and the fare collection facilities on those ramps. McTish, Kunkel & Associates is serving as construction manager for the project.

Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott said Alcoa had awarded the firm a three-year contract to serve as Alcoa's intellectual property division.

Union Switch & Signal has been awarded a contract to provide 50 cab signal sets for new light rail vehicles operating on the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority's Blue Line. US&S will utilize its proven MicroCab Cab signal system for these vehicles. MicroCab is already in service on LACMTA's Green Line vehicles.

Keystone Dedicated Logistics in conjunction with its alliance through Continental Traffic Service Inc. have been selected by Blistex Inc. of Oak Brook, Ill., to manage its U.S. domestic transportation.

Grants/loans

The Bozzone Family Foundation has awarded Providence Family Support Center a $1,000 grant to be used for costs associated with construction of a preschool playground. The support center is a ministry of the Sisters of Divine Providence that helps North Side parents achieve economic self-sufficiency and provides quality care for their children. The playground will be used for the center's child care and preschool participants, many of whom come from at-risk urban families who do not live near areas where children can safely play outdoors. When completed, the playground will enable the children to enjoy outdoor play on a daily basis.

Making a Difference/Doing Good

The Professional Services Marketing Association of Western Pennsylvania is collecting gently worn professional clothing for its second seasonal clothing drive. The clothing drive will support individuals with limited financial means who are entering the work force. Bender Consulting Services Inc. has been selected to receive the Epilepsy Foundation of NJ's 2003 Employer of the Year Award. The recognition is for the tremendous public service accomplished by the company in the last year to provide competitive employment opportunities for residents of New Jersey with epilepsy.

Celli-Flynn Brennan Turkall Architects said Shawn Ulery received his LEED accreditation from the U.S. Green Building Council and the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program.

Schneider Downs & Co. Inc. said Barbara M. Balcita was elected to be the Allegheny regional vice president of the international fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi, and that Douglas J. Keller was certified as Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer of Microsoft Windows 2000.

Pepper Hamilton's Web site, www.pepperlaw.com, earned the "Best Legal Web Site" award in the 2003 WebAwards competition organized by the Web Marketing Association. The site earned high marks in every judging category, including design, innovation, content, technology, interactivity, navigation and ease of use.

Ripple Effects Interactive has been named as a firm "poised to make a national splash" by Media magazine. The nationally circulated publication, which covers the media planning and buying industry, touts the agency's success, growth and future prospects in its current issue.

Junior Achievement of Southwest Pennsylvania Inc. honored Bishop Donald W. Wuerl as 2003 Distinguished Alumnus. The Second Annual Junior Achievement of Southwest Pennsylvania Alumni Luncheon was held at the Home Plate Club at PNC Park. Proceeds from the luncheon helped to establish the Bishop Donald W. Wuerl Scholarship fund. This fund will provide a pupil attending a diocesan elementary school with the opportunity to continue his education by providing tuition assistance to attend any high school in the Diocese of Pittsburgh.

According to results released in the September issue of The American Lawyer, Buchanan Ingersoll ranked No. 1 in the state for its pro bono work. The firm was 49th in the nation.

Verizon Wireless was named one of Working Mother magazine's "100 Best Companies for Working Mothers" for the third consecutive year. The annual list recognizes corporations that offer programs and services that fulfill the needs of working mothers.

Graphic Design usa recently presented Kolbrener Inc. with eight 2003 American Graphic Design Awards for excellence in communication and graphic design. Four of the awards were for identity work completed for EZ-Flo Injection Systems, Fukui Architects, Tournesol and the Blue Tree Gallery. Additional work for EZ-Flo Injection Systems, a trade show booth, and Fukui Architects, a capabilities brochure, also was honored. Two of Kolbrener's creations for the Four Winds Gallery, an R.C. Gorman Poster and ads for the gallery itself, each received recognition by Graphic Design usa.

Paul W. Cain of ARDEX Inc. achieved the highest status conferred by the industry by becoming a Certified Flooring Professional; the CFP certification exam is exclusively for administrative and operations personnel of flooring enterprises and certifies the highest competency in the field.

The 2003-04 Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Subscription Mailer, designed by Agnew Moyer Smith Inc. Communication Planning and Design, was chosen to appear in the Creativity 33 Annual. Edited by David E. Carter, it recognizes outstanding work in advertising and graphic design, with entries from more than 40 countries and all over the country.

Summerset at Frick Park, a large residential development recently captured the 2003 Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence in the Land Use category. The award is presented each year to Pennsylvania's leaders in innovative green technologies and environmental management.

Heritage Valley Health System recently won two national health-care and two regional advertising industry awards for its brand launch marketing campaign. The honors included two Healthcare Advertising Awards, sponsored by the Healthcare Marketing Report, and two district Addy Awards, sponsored by the American Advertising Federation. The awards were co-presented to Heritage Valley and Marc USA/Pittsburgh, the health system's agency of record. Heritage Valley and Marc received a Gold Award in "Outdoor Transit/Billboard" and a Bronze Award in the "Radio Advertising/Series" categories from the Healthcare Advertising Awards. And they won two District II Silver Addy Awards, one for the individual radio spot titled "Football" in the Local Radio category, and the second for the entire brand launch radio series, which consisted of three spots.

Todd Sacco, a manager in the tax consulting practice of Ernst & Young LLP in Pittsburgh, recently earned the professional designation of Certified Specialist in Estate Planning, awarded by the National Institute for Excellence in Professional Education LLC in conjunction with the Pennsylvania state society of CPAs and Surgent and Associates LLC.

M. Katherine Shear, M.D., professor of psychiatry and director of the panic, anxiety and traumatic grief program at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, has been selected as one of 45 women from medical and dental schools in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico as a 2003-2004 fellow by the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program for Women.

John S. Ruch, president of Historic Harmony received the Zelienople Historical Society's Angel Award.

Brady Communications won an award for its work on The Greater Pittsburgh Council Boy Scouts of America 2002 Annual Report in the Nexfor Fraser Papers Design Inspiration Awards, an annual competition honoring graphic design that communicates, educates and inspires.

Junior Achievement of Southwest PA Inc. has been awarded the nonprofit organization's Platinum Summit Award. The award is one of Junior Achievement's highest honors. It is given by the National Junior Achievement organization to local JA offices that have reached outstanding success in financial health, program quality, management effectiveness and program growth. Junior Achievement of Southwest PA is the only office in Pennsylvania to win the prestigious Platinum Summit Award this year.

Joyce A. Bender, president/CEO and founder, Bender Consulting Services Inc. and Bender Consulting Services of Canada Inc., has been selected by Labor Secretary Elaine Chao as one of this year's New Freedom Initiative Award winners. The Secretary of Labor's New Freedom Initiative Award recognizes businesses, organizations and individuals who have demonstrated exemplary and innovative efforts in furthering the employment objectives of President Bush's New Freedom Initiative established in 2001.

Bryan S. Neft, of the litigation group of the Pittsburgh law office of Klett Rooney Lieber & Schorling, was named one of Pennsylvania's "Lawyers on the Fast Track" by American Lawyer Media. The honor recognizes attorneys under 40.

Suzanne Parks, public service officer at First Commonwealth Bank's Pittsburgh loan processing office, received the First Commonwealth Golden Tower Award, honoring her for community service. First Commonwealth will make a donation to the P.O.W.E.R., a halfway house for women recovering from drug and alcohol abuse, in Parks' name.

Sisterson & Co. LLP said Autumn Gindlesperger, senior associate, achieved the designation of certified public accountant and Kelli Niziol, IT support specialist, received her certification from the 2003 Coro IT leadership program.

The magnetic resonance imaging unit at Monongahela Valley Hospital was awarded three-year reaccreditation by the American College of Radiology.
