G.I. mag grows from the ashes of Stars & Stripes
Wednesday, November 12, 2003

Two years ago, Rich McCormack and Chris Hale's media start-up went bankrupt and closed its doors.

Stars and Stripes Omnimedia Inc. was eventually purchased by the Department of Defense, and the former Navy officers looking to offer news and online services to the military community were out of their jobs.

Undaunted, the publishing duo picked themselves up, dusted off and launched Victory Media Inc. almost immediately in December 2001. In 2002, the first year of GI Jobs, a magazine geared toward military members and veterans entering the civilian job market, yielded a profit for the for the Coroapolis-based publishing outfit.

"When we left Stars and Stripes we realized there are lot of unique niches that were underserved from a publishing standpoint," said McCormack, G.I. Jobs' publisher. "As entrepreneurs, you can't let those things die. You just keep going after it."

Next week the monthly magazine will publish its first annual list of the 10 most military-friendly employers in the December issue.

Brink's U.S. topped the list of Fortune 500 companies as the best place to land post-military. What set the armored car company apart, according to Hale, was its record of hiring from the armed forces.

"There are about 225,000 to 350,000 who leave ... [military] service each year. It tends to be one of the largest labor pools, second probably to college campuses," said Hale who serves as general manager of sales and marketing.

With content including "Boots to Suits," an advice column on how to dress for success in the corporate world, generated primarily from freelance journalists, the magazine's circulation is currently at 60,000. Military bases, individual subscribers and a number of active-duty locations carry G.I. Jobs, while Hale and McCormack are aiming for newsstand distribution at a cost of $2.95 per issue in February.
