Penguins Notebook: Crosby's workouts featured in Men's Fitness magazine

A sidebar to the cover story of the February issue of Men's Fitness magazine offers some of the training secrets of Penguins center Sidney Crosby.

But not all of them.

"I don't want to reveal everything," Crosby said yesterday, the day the magazine hit newsstands. "Everyone wants to gain an edge. I'm the one who's working out every day and trying to gain an edge."

According to the article, Crosby's offseason activities with trainer Andy O'Brien include work with weights and balance balls as well as workouts on the track, in the sand. They also incorporate marching drills, tumbling and plyometrics.

Some of the exercises focus on balance and stabilization.

"I don't think it's so much what we do; there's a way to do it," Crosby said. "It's easy to tell someone to go do this, but there's a lot of things while you're doing it, the way your body is positioned."

The main cover story details Crosby's ascent to the top of the hockey world and examines whether he is the next Wayne Gretzky. Crosby entered last night's game against the New York Rangers at Mellon Arena with 61 points, two behind NHL leader Vincent Lecavalier of Tampa Bay.

Crosby this month also is on the cover of Sports Illustrated for Kids and The Hockey News. He's getting the most attention for Men's Fitness, probably because in the cover photo he is wearing a tight shirt.

That wasn't lost on his teammates, who have been ribbing him. He's used to that.

"My first year, it was GQ and Vanity Fair and the Vanity Fair [photo] was no shirt," Crosby said, "so after that I don't think it could get any worse, especially being a first-year guy. I took as bad a beating as it could be, I think."

Savard picked over Malkin

Although the Penguins were pushing for Evgeni Malkin to replace injured Ottawa forward Dany Heatley on the Eastern Conference All-Star roster, the NHL chose Boston center Marc Savard.

Savard leads the Bruins with 11 goals, 47 points in 43 games. Malkin had 20 goals, 49 points in 44 games before last night.

Eaton has surgery

Penguins defenseman Mark Eaton had surgery yesterday to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Eaton, 30, who will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, will miss the rest of the season.

A defensive defenseman, Eaton had three assists and a plus-minus rating of plus-6 in 36 games before being injured Dec. 23. He was playing with Sergei Gonchar, a pair that usually was matched against opponents' top lines.

Conklin's journey

Penguins goaltender Ty Conklin has gotten a lot of attention as a fill-in for injured Marc-Andre Fleury. He was 9-0-1 before last night.

With that attention has come a new label.

"It's the first time I've ever been called a journeyman," Conklin said. "It doesn't bother me too much. I think the fact that I was with three organizations in one year might have had something to do with it."

Conklin, 31, spent most of his career with Edmonton but played with Buffalo and Columbus last season before signing with the Penguins.

Slap shots

Seven scouts were scheduled to be at the game, including three from Columbus. ... The Penguins and Rangers played the only NHL game last night, one of just seven nights this season with just one game scheduled. ... The game featured three of the four NHL players from Alaska -- Conklin (Eagle River) and Rangers forwards Scott Gomez (Anchorage) and Brandon Dubinsky (Anchorage). ... Linesman Mark Pare was honored for working his 2,000th NHL game. The pregame ceremony included a presentation of signed sticks from the two team captains. The Rangers' Jaromir Jagr, who normally gets booed at Mellon Arena when he touches the puck, got booed loudly on his way back to the bench. ... Penguins defenseman Petr Sykora was given the morning skate off. ... The Penguins played without forward Erik Christensen, who is on leave because of the death of his grandfather. Forward Ryan Stone and defenseman Ryan Lannon were healthy scratches. Rangers scratches were winger Brendan Shanahan (hip/hamstring) and defenseman Jason Strudwick.
