Tired of playing from contract to contract, goaltender Jean-Sebastien Aubin was delighted to sign a two-year deal with the Penguins yesterday.
He will receive $847,000 next season, $931,700 the season after that. Those salaries represent raises of 10 percent each year -- he made $770,000 last season -- which is the minimum amount the Penguins would have been required to offer to retain his rights. But Aubin signed early because he played the past two seasons on one-year deals and sought more security.
"When you get a two-year deal, you're not stressed about every game maybe the way I was in the past," Aubin said. "I don't want to think about anything other than playing. I don't need extra pressure."
Aubin, who will turn 25 in three weeks, is coming off a nightmarish season in which he posted a 3-12-1 record, a 3.56 goals-against average and an .879 save percentage.
Still, he is confident he can persuade the coaching staff to give him a chance to unseat starter Johan Hedberg this fall.
"I think it's up to me, not to them. If I play well, put a lot of wins together, I'll get that chance. Last season was hard for me, but it was hard for all of us. I think all of us can do better."
