The Penguins believe Sebastien Caron has the potential to be an impact goaltender in the NHL someday.
Nothing they saw from him last night figures to change that.
Caron stopped 31 of the 32 shots he faced during the Penguins' 3-2 victory against Columbus in their preseason opener at Mellon Arena.
"He played very well," General Manager Craig Patrick said. "We were real pleased. He looked good. He looked confident, sharp. That's kind of what we expected, but you don't really know until you get to watch him."
Caron started the game and played 30 minutes and 22 seconds; Coraopolis native Mark Scally played the rest. The only goal Caron allowed came six minutes into the first period, when Martin Spanhel punched in a rebound from the right side of the crease during a power play.
Penguins left winger Matthew Barnaby countered Spanhel's goal at 14:49 of the second period, when he beat Blue Jackets goalie Frederic Chabot from above the left hash mark. Darius Kasparaitis and Milan Kraft got assists.
Aleksey Morozov put the Penguins up, 2-1, at 1:33 of the third period, tossing a shot past Chabot from near the bottom of the right circle. Rookie center Shane Endicott received the only assist.
Former Penguin Tyler Wright tied the score with a power-play goal at 13:19 of the third, sticking a shot under the crossbar from close range, but Jaromir Jagr scored the winning goal 52 seconds later, when he took a cross-ice feed from Roman Simicek and beat Chabot from inside the right circle.
The Penguins will play New Jersey at 7:05 tonight in Wilkes-Barre.
