After a divisive election where one party won by promising to disrupt Washington, here are my observations.
Legislation to repeal the Clean Water Act, repealing an anti-corruption law for oil companies abroad and signing legislation permitting known mentally ill persons to purchase weapons. A poorly crafted and executed “travel ban.” A desire to repeal Dodd-Frank, returning to the unregulated era that led to the 2008 recession along with the elimination of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, allowing banks to prey on citizens. The president wants to suspend the fiduciary rule eliminating protection for individual investors from unethical financial advisors. A promise to build a border wall, at the expense of U.S. taxpayers and or consumers.
A president who demonizes immigrants for political gain. A president that compares the United States to Russia and its leader. A president who vilified a Muslim Gold Star family but honors a Christian one. A president who does not respect the independence of the judicial branch of government unless it agrees with him. A president who undermines the press to marginalize the truth and suppress free speech. A president willing to promote “alternative facts” to mislead the country or embellish himself. A president who frequently needs a surrogate to explain what he meant to say.
Soon we’ll find out if the congressional budget hawks will threaten to shut down the government as we approach the debt ceiling increase, or if they were just being partisan with President Barack Obama.
