UPMC shouldn’t fear healthy competition

UPMC’s latest financial statement makes a point to highlight growth in its own insurance plan membership as well as all its other corporate metrics (“Chief Financial Officer Says UPMC Is Holding Its Own,” Aug. 21). Since it has accomplished this while competing with Highmark, UPMC concedes an essential point: Competition among health care providers and insurers is a good thing.

Now UPMC wants to get rid of its competition and is willing to throw the region into chaos, leaving patients and employers with little information and great uncertainty.

UPMC should look to its own quarterly report as a sign that competition will help both Pittsburghers and its own financial health.
