As a friend of and physician for our recently deceased Mayor Sophie Masloff, who was an outstanding human being, humanitarian and unselfish politician who stood up for what was right — but not always politically expedient — I feel that I must speak for the people.
Our local health care system is in disarray because of political and financial infighting. Who controls what?
Everyone who has health insurance or Medicaid should be entitled to see any physician or go to any hospital that he or she chooses.
None of these insurers or medical networks built these hospitals, nurtured them or paid for the education of physicians they own.
Presumably they are nonprofit organizations; therefore, they are provided for by our local, state and federal governments and the people they serve.
It is unconscionable that they can dictate where and to whom patients go and charge whatever they choose without posting charges upfront.
It is time — rather, over time — for the people of Western Pennsylvania, our Legislature, governor and judges to resolve this unscrupulous power control of patients’ health and lives.
