I want to express my admiration for the honesty and courage of Rob Rogers for his Aug. 7 cartoon showing terrorized Gaza inhabitants in a cage surrounded by Israeli soldiers and ammunition. As to why the cartoon offends the Jewish Federation’s Community Relations Council, which has organized a letter writing campaign to denounce it, it’s clear that the truth hurts.

Is Gaza not surrounded by a cage? Are the people of Gaza not at the mercy of one of the most powerful armies in the world? Have the people of Gaza not suffered an overwhelming number of civilian casualties from “precision guided weapons” in this and other Israeli military campaigns? Have they the kind of shelters and rescue equipment that are available in Israel? In short, what is inaccurate about the cartoon?

Thank you, Rob Rogers, for encapsulating the tragic fate of the people of Gaza. When Israel finally removes its army and weapons from the battlefield, Gaza’s Palestinians will remain in their cage.
