The Congress of the United States has just begun a five-week hiatus after having taken a one-week break in July. Since the Tea Party-influenced Republicans took control of the House of Representatives in 2010 they have shut down the government for 16 days and threatened to default on our debt.
The Republicans have blocked equal pay for women, blocked lower interest rates on student loans, said “No” to fixing our broken immigration system and voted at least 50 times to repeal all or part of the law bringing affordable health care to millions of Americans.
The befuddled Republican leader in the House, John Boehner, just announced an expensive lawsuit against the twice-elected president of the United States, which has enabled the Democrats to raise well over $7 million since June. A current poll shows that when asked if the current Congress was productive, only 3 percent said it is!
It seems that there is no embarrassing this current crop of politicians. What we should do is pro-rate their salaries to reflect the amount of legislation accomplished in each session. Today’s Republican Party is light years away from the Grand Old Party of Abraham Lincoln and Dwight Eisenhower.
