PG associate editor and former U.S. ambassador Dan Simpson is spot-on with his historical analysis of U.S.-Cuba relations (“Let’s Try Getting Along With Cuba,” July 9). But maybe it’s time for him to come out of retirement and the easy life of writing an occasional editorial or commentary and return to his real work of injecting reason and intelligence in the diplomatic corps.

While it’s nice to have a resident foreign policy guru here, the Obama administration should immediately get this diplomatic past master back into harness. Sure, there are many other talented, intelligent diplomats at work on our behalf, but having one available and accessible as a public voice in our town is a rare thing, and the PG gives its readers a real gift by offering him a column on a regular basis.

If Washington seriously did come calling, I guess I’d rather have Dan Simpson at my breakfast table. But keep an eye out for the black limos, Dan!
