Diminishes racing

Regarding the Belmont Stakes and the comments by California Chrome’s co-owner Steve Coburn (“California Chrome Fails to Lift Triple Crown Jinx,” June 8): Talk about a bad loser. Mr. Coburn criticized Tonalist trainer Christophe Clement because Tonalist didn’t run in the Kentucky Derby or Preakness. Doesn’t Mr. Coburn understand that these are three separate races? Why call it a cowardly act to have your horse well rested and ready for Belmont?

Then he compared this race to a situation where he as a 6-foot-2 man would play basketball against a small boy in a wheelchair. His statements greatly diminish the grandeur of the “sport of kings.”

As an aside, I once petted Affirmed, the last horse to win the Triple Crown.
