UPMC and Highmark have lost focus

In reading “In Defense of Jeffrey Romoff,” Dr. Amesh Adalja, I believe, accurately portrays many of the accomplishments and contributions of Mr. Romoff to the health care system of our area as well as to our economy. I would like to take issue with his statement that “Health care is no different than any other industry.” This is alarming coming from a physician.

Health care is, of course, different. It is a nonprofit industry. This takes the focus away from making a profit and places it on the welfare of the patient. Allegheny County is now dominated by two monopolies, UPMC and Highmark, which seem to have lost this focus.
