Retired Lt. Col. Oliver North, appearing on Fox “Noise,” predictably pilloried the Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl deal.
This would be the same Oliver North who, in 1986, was the ringleader of the Iran-Contra circus, in which U.S. missiles were swapped to our avowed enemies in Iran in exchange for hostages and cash. The money was then used to fund Contra rebels in Nicaragua.
The missiles, meanwhile, could potentially have been used to attack American warships.
At the time of Oliver North’s wheeling and dealing from the White House basement, as his boss, Ronnie the Great, was either snoozing or approving, I was serving on one of those warships.
Theoretically speaking, every vessel in the U.S. fleet was one maniacal Iranian mullah away from being sunk by a missile sold compliments of Ollie’s Bargain Basement. By the grace of God, it did not happen.
There’s a saying that old soldiers don’t die; they just fade away. But when they are as encrusted in battle-hardened partisan hypocrisy as Lt. Col. Oliver North, I fear the fading process may take a while.
