The depths of conservative hypocrisy have no nadir. Driven only by their pathological hatred of a president whose ancestry offends them, conservatives insist that Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl should have been left in the hands of Taliban terrorists. They justify their outrageous assertion by accusing Sgt. Bergdahl of desertion, trying and convicting him in a media circus. They say he should have been left to the Taliban, who might well have tried him in their own media circus and beheaded him.
Our president, on the other hand, believes that Sgt. Bergdahl is a citizen of the United States, who, if he is suspected of a crime, should be brought home to face a proper trial, with the rights and procedures any other American soldier would receive.
Who is a patriot here? Clearly, the president is and the conservatives are not.
Sen. John McCain’s false outrage is the most galling. According to the conservative standard, we should have left him to rot in Hanoi. Negotiating with the communist North Vietnamese for his release was, by their standard, beneath our national dignity.
