Those of us who care about democracy are truly disappointed in the poor showing of registered voters here and throughout the commonwealth. Ten percent of registered Republicans and 20 percent of registered Democrats in Allegheny County voted in the May 20 primary.

I guess we live in such a comfortable world that we do not feel it necessary to perform this simple but invaluable task. Citizens living in war-torn or authoritarian nations often place themselves in harm’s way in order to vote and to select their candidates.

May I suggest that the Post-Gazette place a prominent banner across the front page stating: “Election Day — Vote today from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m”? This would be an excellent public service.
