Leadership lacking

We are now approaching June and there is still no resolution to the UPMC-Highmark dispute. As each day passes more and more stories about individuals being denied access to proper health care are coming to light. I am referring to Lynn Kiesel, who was denied access for treatment at UPMC Mercy because she carried a Highmark insurance product (“Legislators Listen to the Public on UPMC, Highmark Dispute,” May 17). Give me a break! This is absurd and should never happen to anyone who lives in this country.

The time is fast approaching that if UPMC and Highmark cannot or will not negotiate then legislative or regulatory action must be taken. With the exception of Sens. Jay Costa, Randy Vulakovich and Dan Frankel, I cannot believe the total lack of leadership that is being exhibited by a majority of our elected and appointed officials by doing nothing regarding an issue that affects thousands of people here.

What are they waiting for? Why are House bills regarding this issue being blocked from coming to the floor to be voted on? The public has a right to choose the best health care possible; in six months, unless something is done, that right will be denied! Please, do not let this drag on any longer. Show some leadership, character and, above all, common sense and get the deal done so that people can get on with their lives and not have to worry about who their next doctor or surgeon is going to be.
