Healthy guarantee

Jim Palmquist’s May 11 Forum commentary (“Healthy PA Falls Short”) criticizing Gov. Tom Corbett for refusing to steer another half-million Pennsylvanians into a broken Medicaid system simply misses the point.

Increasingly, doctors will not accept new Medicaid patients. The bureaucracy and low reimbursements aren’t worth the trouble. This was one reason the governor resisted Washington’s pressure to move 50,000 low-income children to Medicaid from the state’s successful CHIP program.

What Mr. Corbett seeks to do is use the federal dollars to allow low-income families to purchase health insurance from the very companies doctors already accept.

Expanding Medicaid might guarantee the Obama administration and its supporters in AARP a political win, but it won’t guarantee low-income families a doctor. Mr. Corbett’s plan will.
