Wrong on drilling

I am writing to express my profound disappointment with the vote to approve drilling under Deer Lakes Park (“County Council Votes 9-5 to Approve Natural Gas Lease,” May 7).

It is deplorable that our so-called leaders at the county and state levels continue to be mesmerized by the short-term financial gains from this dangerous and dirty industry. We desperately need to begin the vital and necessary process to move us all away from carbon-based fossil fuels. This requires courageous and visionary decisions and choices about how best to meet our energy needs.

Instead, Allegheny County Council, Gov. Tom Corbett and the state Legislature all perpetuate the disastrous notion that fracking, and other extractive practices, should not only continue but also expand, because it will make us all a few dollars now.

Unfortunately for all of us — and especially for our children — this choice could not be more wrong. In a time when visionary leadership is so critical, the people in positions of authority are failing us all.
