I am extremely disappointed in the so-called male Democrats on Allegheny County Council. Their votes allowing fracking under Deer Lakes Park (“Deer Lakes Drilling OK’d,” May 7) will bring a horribly under-regulated industrial process to our densely populated county, which will cause air, water and noise pollution for years to come.
The breakdown of the vote is seriously depressing to me, a dedicated progressive voter. All but one of our male Democratic county council members voted in favor of drilling. Only two Democrats — Barbara Daly Danko and Bill Robinson — voted against along with all the Republican women: Sue Means, Heather Heidelbaugh and Jan Rae.
I was unable to attend the meetings, but I did email both Heather Heidelbaugh and my representative, Sue Means. They listened to me and to the thousands of other ordinary people who oppose this industrial monstrosity.
At the state and national level, things are different. Most Republicans favor policies benefiting corporate America, especially fossil fuel interests, even when those policies conflict with the general good, and most (not all) Democrats favor policies benefiting the general population. I doubt that my state and national voting patterns will change.
But shame on you, so-called Democrats who voted in favor! If Ms. Heidelbaugh, Ms. Rae or Ms. Means run again for office, they will have my support. I have not voted Republican for more than 15 years, but when government officials listen to the voices of the little people, they deserve my vote regardless of party.
