UPMC care denied

UPMC denies care to patients even when we’re willing to pay for it ourselves.

For many years, I was a patient with the UPMC MS Treatment Center, and it greatly improved my quality of life. When my Highmark insurance recently changed, the doctor’s office called to say, “We are not permitted to see you.” Even though I asked to pay out of my own pocket, my doctor was not permitted to meet me for a final transition visit — or to even refill my prescriptions.

This was not my doctor’s choice, but the UPMC corporate executives’. They retaliate against Highmark by denying access, even to those of us willing to pay extra to keep our doctors.

Who in Harrisburg is allowing this to continue? Who keeps giving nonprofit status to UPMC, yet allows it to punish patients while raking in millions?

It’s time to demand action from Harrisburg. UPMC should accept all insurance plans or be stripped of its tax-exempt status.
