Mayor Bill Peduto is no doubt a very busy man these days in his first months in office. However, he was not too busy to join in a special celebration on April 29 for the Message Carriers of Pennsylvania’s 9th Annual Volunteer Award Banquet. This moving event honors the selfless and dedicated volunteers who give generously of their time, talent and resources to help carry out the mission of Message Carriers: to provide advocacy and recovery-related services to individuals and family members impacted by addiction and/or mental health disorders.

The majority of Message Carriers’ volunteers are individuals in long-term recovery from alcoholism and addiction. Sadly, the stigma surrounding the disease of addiction still exists. The Volunteer Awards Banquet is an opportunity to acknowledge this condition as a disease and celebrate those in recovery living productive lives as contributing community members.

Mayor Peduto presented each of the 24 recipients with his/her award then posed for a photograph with each awardee. Heartfelt congratulations to those who earned the 2014 Message Carriers of Pennsylvania Volunteer Award, and kudos to Mayor Peduto for acknowledging their service.
