The Deer Lakes lease will be good for the county

I am writing in support of the efforts to drill and frack Marcellus Shale wells near the Pittsburgh International Airport and Deer Lakes Park. I am in favor of developing oil and natural gas in the United States. What better way to make our country energy independent especially from countries who consider us the enemy?

There have been so many complaints over the years about the high cost of gasoline and natural gas. Now the shale boom of the last six years is helping to solve the high cost problem and there is opposition to it! It seems inconceivable that a solution is attacked as a problem. When done correctly, drilling and fracking do not harm the environment and they help solve the nation’s energy problems.

The proposals to drill under Deer Lakes Park and around the airport will bring in tens of millions of dollars to Allegheny County. Do those who oppose the drilling have another source for these funds? The money can be used for county parks, to pay down the airport debt and many other projects without raising taxes. Additionally, the county will receive impact fee money when these wells are drilled.

What are we waiting for? As a first step, Allegheny County Council needs to approve the Deer Lakes lease.
