Presidential visits make for worthwhile encounters

Regarding the April 18 editorial “Costly Compliment: A Campus Closes to Give Obama a Political Prop”:

Are you mad? In your editorial, you take a traditional presidential activity and turn it into something sinister. If not mad, then your editorial board, of a certainty, is intellectually unsophisticated.

Historically, every president has used the “bully pulpit” to promote executive initiatives. It is not only a useful tool in getting the word out through a local environment, but it also provides the opportunity for presidents and constituents to meet and interact face to face. What could be more benign — and honorific? Just ask the band Comfort Tech (“Local Band a Hit With the President,” April 18 Local News) — a perfect example of the mutual pleasure these encounters can generate.

If you cannot bring a more thoughtful opinion and analysis of events, just leave the space blank. We’ll understand.
